Jumping on shadows

If I have had any hobby
it was fatherhood.
And my career,
such as it is,
one of professed ignorance
in search of savois faire.
It is a life of closed avenues,
sideroads
that seemed irrelevant,
or unreachable,
or too long in the
bright contrast of the sun.

And all the way
I have played games with my own shadow
thinking
in time, I could outwit my own procrastination
take some leap
that disconnected my follies and self-faith
and left my shadow,
outwitted on the ground.

Now it is a game I play with my son
- jumping on each other's shadows
and he laughs
wondering
if this is a game for grown-ups
who don't know any better.
